Douglas, 66, looked gaunt, weak and pale as he stepped out in New York wearing a baseball cap.

But the Wall Street actor courageously insists on taking seven-year-old Carys to classes each day.

The looks known to millions of movie fans have vanished after his weight plummeted by a reported 30lbs to 10st 5lbs.

Douglas, diagnosed with cancer in August, has completed an eight-week course of radiotherapy and chemo. Sources close to the star say he now struggles to eat solid foods.

He faces a recuperation period of six to eight weeks - but has so far shunned suggestions that he could have a feeding tube inserted into his abdomen. Douglas said last month: "I've decided to fight it. If you do the stomach thing it's a lot of weeks of not swallowing then you have to learn how all over again."

His wife, Welsh actress CATHERINE ZETA-JONES, 41, has been helping his fight at their Manhattan apartment. The couple also bought a £3.3million mansion in the quiet New York area of Bedford as a haven. ( thesun.co.uk )
