Earthquake Jolts Bengkulu - An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Bengkulu at 6.52 on Sunday evening but it did not have potential to trigger a tsunami.
Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) agency in its official website said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 3.28 degrees southern latitude and 101.33 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km under the sea level, or around 81 km southeast of Mukomuko.
The magnitude of the earthquake was strong enough to prompt the people in Padang, West Sumatra, to scramble out of their houses in fear of an aftershock.
"We ran out of our house in panic but a few minutes later we returned because there was no aftershock," said Fahriza, a resident of Padang.
On Sunday morning another earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale also jolted Sigli areas in Banda Aceh and Pidie Jaya, Aceh province.
BMKG in Banda Aceh said the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers on shore at 4.74 degrees northern latitude and -95.96 degrees eastern longitude.
"The earthquake was recorded at III modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in the Banda Aceh city (capital of Aceh province)," Rilza Akbar of the BMKG said.
Earlier on Saturday at 6.50 am local time a magnitude 5.6 earthquake also shook eastern Indonesian city of Ambon in Maluku but it did not trigger a tsunami either.
Head of the Ambon Geophysics Station Benny Sipolo said the epicenter of the temblor was located at 2.91 degrees southern latitude and 129.67 degrees eastern longitude, around 185 Km northeast of Ambon, and at a depth of 25 Km. ( antara )
